Place - Valvod, District-Anand
Valvod Village lies at distance of 7 km from Borsad in Anand District of Gujarat. 68% of the people are engaged in agriculture and 32% are involved in animal husbandry. In Valvod village, the organization had been working with 6 SHGs in total. Since land holding is minimum and there is no other earning source in the village, there was a need for new source of income activity for livelihood.
Most of the people are into agriculture and livestock. Hence, women of the SHGs wanted IG activities which can be done easily and have knowledge about it. During meeting with the staff members of Navrachna Trust, they were informed and guided about the Goatery business looking to their need and easy accessibility. Goatery Business is highly profitable and requires less capital and investment than raising any other livestock. SHG group was given information about Goatery business by the staff and adequate training was given on goat rearing process.

‘Umajben’ was selected as a beneficiary by the SHG group, Jay Harshad Bhavani Swa Shahay Juth on the basis of the economic status. Umajben Fulbhai Vaghri is a resident of the village and her family consists of five members. They own one acre of farming land which is the main source of livelihood for the family. They cultivate cotton, maize and wheat on their farm. It is not enough for their sustenance and there is no other earning source for them as well. Hence, Goatery Support was given to her family as a means of livelihood souce. Umajben is a part of the SHG and have been given timely consultations by the staff and is supported in running their livelihood.

This initiative helped in increase of income for Umajben and provided an additional income source to her family. Umajben is also able to create a healthy environment for her children from Goat milk since it is enriched with nutritional elements and is easily digestible. Hence, Goatery unit is not just an additional income source, but also plays an important role in providing nutrition to the family.
roper maintenance of the Goats pose a problem and hence proper nutrition, timely check-ups needs to be done for growth. Competition in the market is seen over the pricing and the quantities as well could pose a challenge for them.
Market price of goat meat is Rs. 200 per kilogram and an adult healthy goat has an average of 30 kilogram. In a year, approximately 10 units will be produced and selling 10 goats, she can earn around RS 60000 annually. This initiative will help to improve their standard of living as well due to financial stability.
